Ukrainian Christmas Drop: The Kyiv Independent x Pavuk

For centuries, Ukrainian families have decorated their homes for Christmas with a pavuk — a delicate rye straw mobile. Pavuk means “spider” in Ukrainian, likely because its thin straws resemble a spider’s legs or web, and a spider in the house was believed to bring good luck and prosperity. Woven at a shared table on winter evenings, pavuks were believed to protect the home.

We teamed up with Ukrainian brand PAVUK to create two special decoration sets to bring that tradition to homes all over the world. Each set includes everything you need to make your own pavuk, along with handmade Ukrainian ornaments ready to hang on your Christmas tree.

Each pavuk comes with tassels in the Kyiv Independent's signature blue; every set is handmade in Ukraine; and both sets are limited edition, with only 150 sets in total. Made in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast from this year's hand-harvested rye. Carefully packed in gift boxes, these sets bring a Ukrainian Christmas tradition to your home.

About Pavuk

PAVUK is a Ukrainian brand founded in 2023 by Tetiana Poddubna. It creates handmade Christmas decorations and DIY kits, runs workshops, and makes photo and video tutorials.

Tetiana was inspired by winter evenings at her grandmother Kateryna's house: the power out, one wax candle, a neighbor over, the table covered in rye straw. Tetiana's grandmother had sown, harvested, dried, and cut the rye herself, and on winter evenings, they would sort the straw, cut it to length, and weave pavuks together, talking all evening.

Now, Tetiana aims to share this experience with people all over the world. City life leaves little time to grow and dry rye, so PAVUK prepares the straw for you. All you need to add is a few hours with your loved ones.
