In 1918, when the newly established Ukrainian People's Republic adopted the ancient Kyivan Rus symbol as their official coat of arms, Mykhailo Hrushevsky, the first president of an independent Ukrainian state – UNR – commissioned the renowned graphic artist and architect Vasyl Krychevsky to create the official designs for state documents and stamps based of the newly adopted coat of arms. Krychevsky based his work directly on the ancient trident found on the coins of Volodymyr the Great.
