Story behind the illustration

This Christmas, we're featuring the "Carol of the Bells" on our new merchandise.  This iconic melody, a quintessential part of the holiday season, originates from Ukraine.

Born as "Shchedryk," a Ukrainian New Year's song composed in 1914 by Mykola Leontovych, it painted a hopeful tale of a swallow heralding prosperity. Introduced to Europe by the Ukrainian National Chorus in the 1920s, its captivating melody was later paired with English lyrics in 1936, transforming into the beloved carol we know today.

But the carol's story carries a poignant note. Composer Mykola Leontovych never witnessed "Shchedryk's" global triumph. A victim of Soviet oppression, his life was tragically cut short in 1921. Adding a layer of historical intrigue, some believe "Carol of the Bells" may have even played across New York City at the very moment he was killed.
