This embroidered "Carol of the Bells" design by Ukrainian artist Polina Olkhovnikova rings in the holiday spirit with a touch of Ukrainian heritage. This quintessential Christmas melody originated in Ukraine as "Shchedryk," a New Year's song composed in 1914 by Mykola Leontovych.
Its journey west was a testament to the perseverance of the Ukrainian National Chorus, who, against all odds and facing immense challenges, brought this captivating melody to European and then American audiences in the 1920s. Captivated by its enchanting melody, American composer Peter J. Wilhousky, with Ukrainian roots, adapted it in 1936 with new English lyrics centered around Christmas bells, thus giving birth to "Carol of the Bells," the beloved holiday song we know today.
Tragically, Leontovych never witnessed his creation's global impact. A victim of Soviet oppression, his life was cut short in 1921, adding a somber note to this festive tune.
